Description
This lot comprises a collection of five miniature ceramic character teapots and jugs, each featuring hand-painted glazed decoration. The group includes two matching miniature teapots depicting a gentleman in a red coat, a white patterned waistcoat, and a black hat. Also included is a full-bodied seated Toby jug wearing a green coat, yellow breeches, and a black hat; a small character jug depicting a man in a red coat and a black tricorn hat; and a character jug bust of an elderly man with spectacles and a red-and-white patterned neckerchief.
The seated Toby jug bears printed marks to the base for Tony Wood, Staffordshire, England, alongside a crest featuring a lion rampant. The character jug bust of the elderly man is marked to the underside with a green printed scroll mark containing the words Lancaster, Sandland, Handpainted, Hanley, and England, surmounted by the words Character Ware and with Sandland below. A hand-painted black mark in the shape of a tick or the letter L is also present on this base. A British one-pound coin is included in the images for scale.
