An earthenware commemorative mug produced for the 1937 coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. The vessel features a bulbous lower body with three concentric moulded rings and an angular handle. The exterior is decorated with multi-colour transfer-printed designs. One side depicts twin portrait profiles of the King and Queen within a blue Garter ribbon bearing the motto Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense, surmounted by a royal crown and flanked by oak leaves and acorns, with a scroll below inscribed Dieu Et Mon Droit. The reverse displays a central royal GE cypher within a laurel wreath, also surmounted by a crown. The rim is inscribed with the text George VI & Queen Elizabeth May 1937 Coronation. The base bears a transfer-printed mark in black consisting of an oval garter-style mark containing a Union Jack flag, with the text Official Design Of The British Pottery Manufacturers Federation and Made In England, followed by a small character resembling a letter f or numeral 1. This mark identifies the piece as an official commemorative design produced by a member pottery of the federation.
