Lot 8:
Description
Japan, early 20th century (Taisho or early Showa period). This single red clay vase of baluster form is a fine example of Tokoname ware produced in the style of Chinese Yixing stoneware. The vessel features a central decorative band in low relief depicting a celestial dragon and phoenix among swirling clouds, set against a densely stippled sharkskin ground. The rim is finished with a leiwen (key-fret) border, while the shoulder is adorned with a collar of prunus blossoms. The lower body is further detailed with vertical columns of incised Chinese characters. The iconography of the dragon and phoenix represents the harmonious union of imperial power and grace. Dimensions: Height approx. 24 cm; Diameter approx. 13 cm.
