Description
A St. John Ambulance Association proficiency medallion and associated service bars manufactured by William Dowler and Sons of Birmingham. Constructed from gold and silver, the circular medallion features a central Maltese cross with lions and unicorns in the angles, surrounded by the inscription THE ST. JOHN AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION. The reverse is engraved in gothic script with the name Albert Fernihough and service number 253937. The lot includes thirteen ornate silver bars linked in a continuous chain dating from 1924 to 1936, plus two additional detached bars dated 1938 and a partially obscured date, likely 1937. Each component is stamped with the recipient number 253937. The medallion and bars carry Birmingham hallmarks including the lion passant, anchor, and date letter z for 1924, alongside the maker mark WD&S.
