Edwardian Sterling Silver Vesta Case by Henry Matthews Birmingham 1908

A sterling silver Vesta case of rectangular form with rounded corners and a hinged flip-top lid. The exterior is embellished with chased and repoussé decoration featuring a floral motif, specifically chrysanthemums, surrounded by scrolling foliage. A small suspension ring for attachment to an Albert chain is present on the upper corner. The base of the case is fitted with an integral corrugated striker plate for lighting friction matches. The upper rim of the case body is struck with a series of hallmarks comprising the HM maker mark for Henry Matthews, the Birmingham anchor assay mark, the lion passant sterling silver standard mark, and the date letter i for 1908.
