Lot 24:
Description
This lot comprises two US obsolete banknotes from the American Civil War era. The first is a State of North Carolina treasury note for the denomination of ten cents, issued in Raleigh and dated 1 September 1862. It features serial number 283 and a handwritten signature of J.W. Thompson for the Public Treasurer. The central vignette depicts a farmer ploughing a field with a team of two horses. It was printed in black ink by J.T. Paterson and Company, Augusta, Georgia. The second item is a fifty cent note issued by the Bank of Augusta, Georgia, dated 1 January 1863, designated as series A. The text indicates it is payable in Confederate Treasury Notes when presented in sums of five dollars. This note is printed in black with red highlights for the denomination. The reverse of the Augusta note displays a remainder printing of a four dollar note from the same bank, featuring a classical seated female vignette and ornamental lathework.
