Description
This pair of studio pottery items comprises a globular vase and a reticulated decorative plate, both featuring designs in the Hungarian folk tradition, characteristic of the pottery produced in Hodmezovasarhely. The pieces are fashioned from a dark-bodied ceramic finished with a matte dark brown-to-black glaze. The decoration is executed using a hand-applied slip-trailing technique, displaying stylised floral motifs in shades of ochre and cream. The vase is of globular form with a short neck and flared rim, featuring a band of wavy lines and large floral sprays. The circular plate has a scalloped rim and a reticulated border with rectangular piercings, decorated with cream dots and a scrolling vine pattern surrounding a central floral bouquet. The reverse of the plate is fitted with a string for wall hanging. Both items bear slip-trailed marks to the base; the vase shows characters resembling a stylised M or W and a cursive S, while the plate shows a cursive S above a flourished Z.
Plate: 18cm – 20cm diameter
Vase: 12cm – 14cm height.
