Lot 1160:
Description
A pair of hand-carved wooden figurines depicting maritime subjects, executed in the traditional Scandinavian flat-plane carving style. This technique is characterised by distinct, angular knife strokes used to create form and detail without the use of sanding. The first figure is carved with a white beard and captain’s cap, wearing a dark grey double-breasted coat with gold-painted buttons, white trousers, and a peg leg. The second figure wears a similar cap and a bright blue double-breasted coat with gold-painted buttons, white trousers, and black boots, and is depicted smoking a pipe. Both figures are mounted on integral, rectangular wooden bases. The style and execution are consistent with 20th-century folk art traditions, specifically resembling the work of the Trygg family of carvers, although no signatures or marks are present.
