Description

An Edwardian sterling silver commemorative medal or watch fob issued to mark the Coronation Sports of 1902. The obverse features an intricate openwork frame surrounding a central heraldic shield. The shield is quartered and decorated with motifs including a bishop’s crook, a tree, and lions, with the inscription CORONATION SPORTS and the date 1902. The reverse is plain and bears a complete set of British hallmarks: the maker’s mark V & S for Vaughton and Sons, the lion passant for sterling silver, the anchor for the Birmingham assay office, and the date letter c for 1902. Vaughton and Sons were a prominent Birmingham firm specialising in the production of medals and sporting awards. The piece is fitted with an integral suspension loop for attachment.
