Description

A collection of five WH Goss pottery items comprising heraldic and commemorative porcelain plaques. The group includes two horseshoe-shaped wall plaques, two diamond-shaped plaques, and one shield-shaped wall pocket. The horseshoe plaques are decorated with transfer-printed text titled The Old Horse Shoe and The Legend, with one featuring a central roundel of the Crystal Palace and the other a city crest. Both horseshoe plaques bear the W.H. Goss goshawk mark on the reverse, with one additionally marked Pub. By Dyson & Sons Windsor. The large diamond-shaped plaque features an illuminated serpent with the quote Seeke out the good in every man and is signed Adolphus Goss. It includes heraldic shields for Lancaster, John of Gaunt, Lancashire, and the Royal Arms of King Edward VII. The smaller diamond-shaped plaque commemorates the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley in 1924, displaying the official lion crest. The shield-shaped plaque is decorated with the arms of the See of York. All items feature polychrome transfer-printed designs on a white glazed ground with gilt-line rims.
