Lot 583:
Description
A pair of ethnographic watercolour portrait studies on paper depicting Tibetan figures. One painting portrays an elderly man with a thin moustache and goatee, wearing a traditional fur-trimmed hat with a tall yellow crown and holding a string of red prayer beads. The second painting depicts a young woman with long dark plaits, wearing a similar fur-trimmed hat with a tall dark crown and a light-coloured floral garment. Both portraits are set against a background of diagonal blue watercolour washes. The works are housed in simple gilt wood frames under glass. These studies are characteristic of mid-20th-century ethnographic art documenting the peoples of the Himalayan region.
Dimensions: 560mm x 375mm approximately each including frame.
