Description

A British miner’s flame safety lamp manufactured by The Protector Lamp & Lighting Co. Ltd. of Eccles, Manchester. This Type SL model incorporates Prestwich’s patent and is constructed with a heavy brass fuel vessel and middle cage, a clear glass cylindrical chimney, and a tapered steel upper bonnet. A central circular brass identification plaque is riveted to the bonnet, embossed with the maker’s name and the text TYPE SL, PRESTWICH’S PATENT, PROTECTOR, APPROVED UNDER LIGHTING SCHEDULE B, and MAKERS & OWNERS ECCLES, MANCHESTER. The plaque is stamped with the inventory number 2414, and the brass shoulder of the base is stamped with the number 1315. The lamp features a side-mounted magnetic locking mechanism designed to prevent unauthorised opening. The steel bonnet is designed with a ring of vertical ventilation apertures under a domed cap with an integrated steel suspension hook. The underside of the brass base contains a cross-slotted adjustment screw for the internal wick assembly.
