Description
This mid-19th-century volume is a New Comprehensive Reference Bible, containing the Old and New Testaments, published in London and Edinburgh by Thomas Nelson in 1849 (MDCCCXLIX). The work is a thick octavo-format volume bound in full dark brown morocco leather. The boards feature elaborate gilt-stamped scrolling borders, and the spine is constructed with five raised bands and ornate gilt-tooled compartments. The spine is lettered in gilt: COMPREHENSIVE REFERENCE BIBLE PSALMS. The text is arranged in double columns with central reference columns and includes gilt edges. A functional metal clasp is present, with the strap attached to the rear board and a catch on the front. The front flyleaf bears a contemporary handwritten inscription in ink: To his Sister, From Peter Gray May, 1850. The title page includes the Royal Coat of Arms and states: Printed by Authority.
