A Celtic Pottery Newlyn Phoenix Pattern Square Dish

A Celtic Pottery earthenware square dish decorated in the Phoenix pattern. The shallow form features rounded corners and a slightly raised rim. The hand-decorated central motif depicts a stylised bird in dark brown and black against a mottled blue and white ground. The rim is finished with a coordinating border of abstract scrolls and dots. The underside is finished in a pinkish-tan speckled glaze. The base retains the original rectangular gold foil manufacturer label which reads celtic pottery NEWLYN CORNWALL below a stylised figure pictogram.
