A 20th Century Chinese Carved Hardwood Figure of Shou Lao

A hand-carved stained hardwood figure depicting the Chinese Star God of Longevity, Shou Lao. The figure is traditionally rendered with a characteristically high, domed forehead and a long, flowing beard. He is shown standing, holding a gnarled wooden staff in his right hand and a large peach, a traditional symbol of immortality, in his left. He wears long, flowing robes with incised detailing at the waist and hem. The figure is set upon an integral, squared-off base. The underside of the base is incised with the marks MADE IN HONG KONG and contains a larger, roughly oval-shaped recessed mark near the centre. This mark is consistent with 20th-century export production from Hong Kong.
