Description
A collection of nine pieces of late 19th to early 20th-century heraldic crested china, including examples by W.H. Goss. The porcelain items feature a variety of forms including a large three-handled loving cup, a pitcher with a gilt rim, an hourglass-form vase with a side handle, a miniature boot, a small bell, two beakers, a globular bowl, and a square-bodied vessel. The decoration consists of polychrome transfer-printed heraldic crests and coats of arms. Represented locations and families include Bolton Abbey, Yorkshire, the Arms of the Duke of Devonshire with the motto Cavendo Tutus, Southampton, Chester, Ilfracombe with the motto Potens Salubritate, and Greenock with the motto God Speed. One vessel features a commemorative crowned M cipher. Several pieces are finished with hand-applied gilt lining to the rims. A printed mark is present on at least one piece depicting a goshawk on a horizontal bar with the text W.H. GOSS.
