Description
A 20th-century Chinese export style ceramic figurine depicting Budai, commonly known as the Laughing Buddha. The figure is depicted in a traditional seated pose with a joyful expression, pendulous earlobes, and a prominent exposed stomach. He is shown wearing ornate robes and holds a string of prayer beads in his right hand. The item is crafted from glazed ceramic and decorated with polychrome overglaze enamels and gilt highlights. The robes are finished in a palette of green, pink, and orange. The green sections of the robe feature fine gilt-painted decoration, including shou longevity characters and scrolling cloud motifs. The pink portions are decorated with floral sprays in the Famille Rose style. The unglazed base of the figurine features several marks around a central circular vent hole. Above the hole is an impressed mark consisting of the digits 5 and 0. Below the hole is an impressed square seal mark containing four characters in Chinese script. To the left of the hole is a handwritten mark in black ink reading 6 and 5.
