Lot 1387:
Description
A novelty teapot produced in glazed earthenware, modelled in high relief in the form of a spiked sea shell, such as a murex or conch. The piece is decorated in the majolica style with a mottled or sponged lead glaze in shades of forest green and brown over a cream-coloured ground. The body rests on three integral shell-spine feet and features a matching lid with a small shell-form finial and a circular steam vent. It is fitted with an overhead bail handle constructed from coiled metal wire attached to ceramic lugs. The interior and underside of the lid reveal the cream earthenware body. No factory marks or signatures are visible. Similar examples are frequently attributed to mid-20th century Japanese or European souvenir ware production.
