Description
A cast pewter figurine produced by the Royal Hampshire Art Foundry, depicting a Victorian-era newsboy. The figure is portrayed wearing a bowler hat and a long coat, carrying a bundle of newspapers under his left arm while holding a single copy aloft in his right hand. A newsagent’s placard is suspended from his shoulders, featuring the relief-cast inscription THE TIMES GREAT EXHIBITION OPENS, referring to the 1851 Great Exhibition in London. The figure stands on an integrated circular base with a cobblestone texture. The underside is finished with black felt and features a gold-stamped mark consisting of a crown symbol above the text Royal Hampshire, Sculpted by, and the signature R. Hardy. A small, indistinct impressed mark is present on the rear vertical edge of the base.
