Description
Two Japanese wooden boxes featuring traditional Yosegi-zaiku marquetry and parquetry techniques. The first box is a puzzle box, or himitsu bako, featuring a Sansui Zougan inlaid scene on the lid depicting Mount Fuji, a traditional sailing vessel, and a lakeside dwelling, framed by a chequered parquetry border. The sides are decorated with geometric parquetry patterns. The second box features a central diamond-shaped inlay of a Scottish Terrier, surrounded by a chequered border and geometric parquetry sides, likely produced for the Western export market. Both boxes are constructed from various natural woods and date to the early 20th century.
