G80 Weekly General Auction Monday
Lot 84:
Description
A group of five miniature heraldic porcelain vessels produced by the W.H. Goss factory, Stoke-on-Trent, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. Each piece is crafted from fine white glazed porcelain and features transfer-printed polychrome town crests or monochrome architectural views. The collection includes replicas of significant historical artefacts, specifically: a model of an ancient posset cup found at Hitchin featuring the Derby crest; a model of a 1682 leaden measure from Amersham Town Hall with the Rochdale crest; a model of an old jug found in North Square, Dorchester with the Ilkley crest; and a model of the Winchester College Black Jack featuring a monochrome view of an abbey church. Each item is finished with a hand-applied gilded rim. All pieces bear the printed W.H. Goss falcon maker’s mark to the underside alongside descriptive text identifying the historical model and relevant registration numbers. These items represent the popular Victorian and Edwardian tradition of collecting souvenir heraldic ware. Heights range approximately 3cm to 7cm.
Condition report:
The collection is in overall good condition. There are no apparent chips, cracks, or professional repairs. There is minor rubbing to the gilt highlights on the rims and very light surface wear consistent with age and display.
