E85 Timed Economy Auction Tuesday
Lot 42:
Description
A cylindrical ceramic vessel finished in a matte charcoal-grey with bronze-toned highlights to the relief decoration. The exterior is ornamented with moulded friezes arranged in horizontal bands. The primary decoration features figures in combat, including gladiators with shields and weapons, alongside robed figures. These scenes are bordered by foliate scrolls and a palmette motif to the upper shoulder. Several incised characters are visible within the frieze, including letters such as Λ, Υ, A, M, and W. The form and decoration are based on the Roman Colchester Vase, a type of Nene Valley colour-coated ware. A British coin is included in the photography for scale purposes.
